Learning Social Interaction from the Wizard: A Proposal

چکیده
Learning from demonstration (LfD) is a widely-used technique for programming robot behavior. Despite its flexibility and applicability to a wide range of tasks, LfD is most typically used to learn non-social behaviors. To our knowledge, no prior work has learned robot behavior from demonstration for interaction that is primarily social in nature. In this paper, we conjecture that LfD can be used to develop robot behavior capable of interacting socially with humans, in scenarios such as a sharing the use of a playful and educational app. These demonstrations, we argue, should be provided within a Wizard-of-Oz paradigm. Thus, we refer to LfD for social human-robot interaction as learning from the wizard (LfW). We describe the corresponding algorithmic and experimental framework and explore challenges in designing LfW systems. Finally, we describe two ongoing projects involving LfD for human-robot interaction, along with a robotic platform and cognitive architecture that are common between

Wizard of Oz experiments for companions
Wizard of Oz experiments allow designers and developers to see the reactions of people as they interact with to-bedeveloped technologies. At the Centre for Interaction Design at Edinburgh Napier University we are developing a Wizard of Oz system to inform and further the design and development of Companion based technologies. Companions are intelligent, persistent, personalised, multimodal, nat...
متن کاملApplying Wizard of Oz Method to Learning Interface Agent
The Wizard of Oz (WOZ) method has been used in natural language processing area especially for evaluating and getting corpus for dialogue design. Furthermore in reference [7], this method was used to formalize the assumptions about what could be implemented in the interface agent system. The unique feature of applying WOZ is simulating human-computer interaction as distinct from human-human int...
متن کاملLearning from the Wizard: Programming Social Interaction through Teleoperated Demonstrations (Extended Abstract)
This paper considers the question of whether robots can be effectively programmed for autonomous social interaction through learning from demonstrations recorded via Wizardof-Oz teleoperation. We present a novel LfW system for educational play between young children and a robot and results from a randomized experiment comparing a teleoperated robot and a robot with autonomous behavior derived b...
متن کاملMachine Learning and Social Robotics for Detecting Early Signs of Dementia
This paper presents the EACare project, an ambitious multidisciplinary collaboration with the aim to develop an embodied system, capable of carrying out neuropsychological tests to detect early signs of dementia, e.g., due to Alzheimer’s disease. The system will use methods from Machine Learning and Social Robotics, and be trained with examples of recorded clinician-patient interactions. The in...
